10 Interview Tips Straight From Hiring Managers
We surveyed hiring managers across industries to find out what really moves the needle in interviews. Here's what they told us.
1. Research the Company (Really)
"You'd be shocked how many candidates know nothing about us," says one manufacturing HR director. "Spending 30 minutes on our website and LinkedIn puts you ahead of 70% of applicants."
2. Arrive Early, But Not Too Early
10-15 minutes is ideal. Earlier creates awkwardness; later creates anxiety.
3. Bring Specific Examples
"Don't just tell me you're a hard worker. Tell me about a specific time you went above and beyond."
4. Ask Thoughtful Questions
Your questions reveal your priorities. Ask about the team, projects, growth opportunities—not just salary and vacation.
5. Be Honest About Weaknesses
"Everyone has weaknesses. I want to know you're self-aware and working on them."
6. Follow Up
A thank-you email within 24 hours is expected. A handwritten note makes you memorable.
7. Dress Appropriately
When in doubt, slightly overdress. "I'd rather see someone in a tie who doesn't need one than someone casual who should have tried harder."
8. Show Enthusiasm
"Skill matters, but attitude is huge. I can train skills; I can't train enthusiasm."
9. Don't Badmouth Previous Employers
Even if it's deserved. "It makes me wonder what they'll say about us someday."
10. Be Yourself
"Interviews are exhausting when people put on an act. I want to know who I'm actually hiring."
